For Good Luck in the New Year

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on December 30, 2011 by valleyacupuncture
Eat this! According to Bon Appetit Magazine

Many of the world’s most persistent New Year’s traditions revolve around eating, with certain foods acting as symbols of the eater’s hopes and wishes for the future. Recurring themes here are foods that symbolize wealth, prosperity, forward motion, long life and other sundry nice things that might (hopefully) happen to a person in the coming year.

If you’d like to get yourself some good juju for 2012, here are ten ways to eat for luck on New Year’s Day.

1. Eat twelve grapes at midnight. The Spanish and Portuguese eat twelve grapes as the clock chimes twelve times for midnight, to symbolize the twelve months of the new year. Incidentally, eating grapes this quickly is not as easy as it may sound.

2. Seek out ring-shaped food for breakfast. Consider bagels or doughnuts for breakfast (don’t you always?), which represent not only carby deliciousness, but also the year coming full circle.

3. Down some pig. Lots of people consider pork to be the luckiest of all foods to eat on New Year’s Day. Why? Pigs are rotund, which represents prosperity (not, as it turns out, weight gain). They also “root forward” with their noses, which is supposed to symbolize progress. You can choose to eat your lucky pig any which way, including ham, sausage, whole roasted suckling pig, ham hocks, bacon, pancetta…sorry, where was I?

4. Smash a pomegranate on the floor. (And waste a perfectly good piece of fruit?) In Greece, when the new year turns, a pomegranate is smashed on the floor in front of the door to break it open and reveal seeds symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. The more seeds, the more luck.

5. Roast whole fish for lunch.  Fish are lucky in three ways: their scales resemble coins, they travel in schools, which represents prosperity, and they swim forward, symbolizing progress. This option has the added benefit of complying with whatever New Year’s dietary resolutions you’ve likely made.

6. Slurp soba noodles without breaking them. In Japan, long buckwheat noodles symbolize long life, and are therefore lucky–but only if you eat them without chewing or breaking them. So get your slurping technique down.

7. Nosh on greens. They resemble paper money, and who doesn’t want more money next year? Everything from cabbage to kale to your Mesclun salad mix applies here.

8. Whip up a batch of Hoppin’ John. This dish of black-eyed peas and rice is customary for New Year’s Day in the American south, where black-eyed peas are considered auspicious based on their resemblance to coins.

9. Cook some lentils. Can you guess what lentils resemble? Money! Yes, these coin-shaped legumes are lucky in Brazil and Italy, and are said to have been eaten for luck since the Roman times.

10. Bake a coin into a cake. The second Greek tradition on our list, this involves a special lemon-flavored cake called a vasilopita baked with a coin inside (again with the money!). Whoever finds the coin gets a year of good luck. That, or a chipped tooth.

Hot Flash!!!!!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on September 20, 2011 by valleyacupuncture

Yes, acupuncture can help. Hot flashes plague many mid life women, including me. In a recent Turkish study of post menopausal women results show that acupuncture reduces the symptoms of menopause.

In a five week study, half the women received actual acupuncture in 10 acupuncture points, twice a week for 20 minutes. The other half received the same treatment with blunted needles that did not penetrate the skin, although the patient believed they did.

At he end of the study the women who received the actual acupuncture reported their hot flashes were less and their estrogen levels were significantly higher than the other group.

The psychological symptoms of menopause were improved in both groups. The researcher believe the benefits would have been greater if the patients had received more than 10 treatments.

Acupuncture actually works?

Posted in Uncategorized on September 13, 2010 by valleyacupuncture

Finally some definitive information to satisfy those who insist on understanding “how” Acupuncture works from a Western perspective. Researchers from the University of Rochester found when acupuncture needles were inserted into the feet of mice there was an increase in the body’s natural pain-killers and anti-inflammatory chemicals.

Adenosine, the compound that reduces pain and inflammation, rose dramatically at the points of insertion. When the needles are rotated, slightly injuring the tissue, the immune system comes to the rescue to repair the area and surrounding tissue. This call to action allows the natural healing to occur. Acupuncture does not cure it is simply a trigger that clears the way for the body to heal itself. Our body and the ability to heal is miraculous. Years of poor  self care and use of medications can confuse the signal to heal. The Acupuncturist identifies what is blocked or out of balance and inserts the needles to re-engage the natural healing ability.

My feeling is that unless you are a neuroscientist it doesn’t really matter how acupuncture works, what matters is IT DOES WORK!

Average loss-3.5 lbs per week!!!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on June 16, 2010 by valleyacupuncture

It’s been 6 weeks and I’ve lost 22 lbs! I started with the Standard Process 21 Day Purification Program to jump start the weight loss in a healthy way and then continued on with their eating plan. It’s been so easy it’s hard for me to believe I’ve been this successful. Naturally I lost the greatest number of pounds the first couple of weeks. Now as the loss is slowing to about 2 lbs a week, I need to kick it up a notch and start exercising since I still have 28 lbs to go!

I’ve had 6 patients join me on the program and they are also seeing the same kind of weight loss, one even lost 8 lbs. the first week. In addition, they have reported improvement in digestion, allergies, sleep, headaches, and even reduction of joint pain. This is because the liver is being cleansed and the body balanced and supported with the correct nutrients to improve overall health and a the same time lose weight. Sounds like a Win Win to me!

Since my patients are having such success I have decide to start a 21 Day Jumpstart Group Program beginning July 5th in Holister and July 6th in San Jose. There is a big benefit to participating in a group program, in groups everyone helps each other with increased enthusiam and support.  If you are interested please call the office for more information: Valley Acupuncture (408)578-0106. I Lost 13 lbs. in 17 days

Posted in Beauty, Health, Weight Loss with tags , , on May 24, 2010 by valleyacupuncture

Like many of you I have struggled with mid-life weight gain for a variety of reasons, some under my control and some not. Since the beginning of the year I have tried a couple of weight loss programs with no success. My body seemed to be out of whack (that would be the medical term) and I have had number of nagging health issues for a couple of years now.  In researching  a good cleanse program for my patients, I stumbled across the Standard Process 21 Day Purification Program. It is composed of whole foods plus supplements that contain vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to support all major organs. The program looked good and sounded simple so I thought I would test it before recommending it to my patients never even thinking about a weight loss component. I started and three days later I had lost 3 lbs, not so unusual I thought, it was probably water weight. I continued, one week later I had lost another 6.5 lbs (9.5 total). Better still; I was sleeping great, my usual high energy had returned, and my hair stopped falling out. WOW this was GREAT!!!!! It was a Eureka moment on day 17 when I weighed and had lost a total of 13 lbs. To say I am thrilled and motivated is an understatement.

Another bonus to the program is I haven’t been hungry and it hasn’t been difficult to stick with it, even sitting with a friend eating a noisy bowl of popcorn right in front of me. I am committed to lose a total of 50 lbs so I thought I would do the “Biggest Loser” thing and let the world watch my progress. I will keep you updated.

If you want to join me in melting the pounds away give my office a call and we’ll set up a complimentary consultation. Valley Acupuncture 408 578-0106

Spring is full of change

Posted in 1 on March 8, 2010 by valleyacupuncture

Spring is a beautiful time of year in Silicon Valley. Our hills are covered with fresh green grass, the fruit trees begin to blossom, the Santa Cruz Mountains are full of bright yellow Acacia trees, and our skies change hourly between brilliant blue and rain clouds.

Spring means something else to many of us. Spring headaches are brought on by allergies, wind, or the changes in the barometer. Sports injuries and sore backs and muscles are common at this time of year from using muscles that have been taking it easy all winter. This is also cold and flu season and allergies can be terrible for some of us. Don’t be slowed down by any of these problems.

Remember, acupuncture is very effective in quickly getting you back out to enjoy the season. It’s also a great way to boost your immune system and relieve stress. Rather than suffer…DO something!

If you change nothing, nothing will change. George Bernard Shaw

Top 10 Bad Things That Are Good For You

Posted in 1 on December 17, 2009 by valleyacupuncture

Beer quells heart disease and chocolate staves off cancer? Though often tagged with a disclaimer, studies that tell us to eat, inhale and generally indulge in “bad stuff” is music to our ears. So go ahead and enjoy these bad-for-you remedies — everything in moderation, as they say — until the next study inevitably overturns the research.

BEER: The newest bad kid on the block, beer has long been overshadowed by its healthier alcoholic cousins. While no one’s suggesting you switch that glass of antioxidant-rich Pinot Noir for a tall glass of lager—there’s still that beer gut to worry about—new research has suggested that moderate beer intake can actually improve cardiovascular function. Now if only a scientist will discover the health benefits of ballpark franks and chicken wings. Heaven.

ANGER: If you’re one of those people who tends to bottle things up, only to explode … don’t hold it in so long. Studies show that bursts of anger here and there are good for the health, and can be an even more effective coping mechanism than becoming afraid, irritated or disgusted. Anger, like the consumables in this list, however, is best in moderation: stay angry for long periods of time and you’ll be plagued with a host of health issues, like blood pressure, sleep disorders and lung damage.

COFFEE: Java is one of the most debated substances around. Is it good for you? Is it bad for you? Both? The consensus, now anyways, seems to favor those who enjoy their morning jolt—unrelated studies claim coffee is a major source of antioxidants in our diet and can help lower your risk of diabetes. Something in the beans is also thought to ease the onset of cirrhosis of the liver and pancreatitis, good news for those who like to party hard all night before their morning caffeine boost.

LSD: We’re definitely not in the business of advocating drug use. But check out this interesting science: In heavy drinkers, small doses of LSD have been thought to help bypass the rock-bottom stage of alcoholism and prevent relapses. These studies—some decades old—were done in closely monitored, clinical settings; many patients haven’t had a drink in the many years since. It’s an interesting finding that needs a lot more investigation, and not a remedy that should ever be tried at home. Meantime—and this may come as no surprise—a recent study of 36 volunteers who took an LSD-like drug in a lab setting had them reporting mystical experiences and behavior changes that lasted for weeks.

SUNLIGHT: Exposure to the sun’s rays is necessary to survive, but can also kill you in gross, cancerous quantities. Asthmatics, at least, could benefit from measured doses of ultraviolet rays, according to scientists. Sunlight suppressed the immune reactions that cause asthma in some lab studies with mice and could be used to treat humans afflicted with the disease in the future. And sunlight—even if indirect, such as on a shaded porch—is known to boost the mood. Extra sunlight can help office workers avoid afternoon drowsiness, a recent study found. There’s still no excuse to head outside and bake, however.

MAGGOTS: They’re creepy, slimy and altogether ooky, but maggots can save your life. These squirmy larvae are science’s newest wonder-cure and were approved in 2003 as the Food & Drug Administration’s only live medical device. Placed on serious wounds, maggots mimic their “wild” lifestyle and munch on bacteria and dead tissue, stimulating healing and helping to prevent infection.

MARIJUANA: It’s medicinal, we swear! Marijuana, often associated with memory loss, is ironically now being hyped as a way to stave off the ultimate form of memory loss—Alzheimer’s. Recent studies on mice suggest that anti-inflammatories found in the drug prevent the clumping of brain proteins, one major cause of the disease. So when should you start preventative therapy? We suggest waiting for the human studies to wrap up.

RED WINE: A crucial ingredient in the diets of the world’s heart-healthiest populations—like those Bordeaux-guzzling French—red wine has long been known to have potent anti-cancer and artery-protecting benefits. The key, some studies indicate, is an antioxidant found specifically in the skin of red wine grapes, called resveratrol. The latest studies even link resveratrol to greater endurance, a reduction in gum disease and Alzheimer’s. White wine, which is fermented after the skins are removed, is less beneficial according to some studies.

CHOCOLATE: Chocolate lovers rejoice: study after study lately has touted the magical benefits of the indulgent treat, which is packed with the antioxidant flavonols that prevent certain cancers and keep your arteries from clogging. The most recent news? These powerful chemicals may even increase blood flow to the brain, warding off dementia. Just stick to the highest cocoa content possible—the bars packed with sugar don’t help your health one bit.

SEX: Scientists have found that the benefits of sex go beyond immediate, ahem, gratification and satisfying the goal of procreation. Besides the obvious evolutionary purposes, we can all take pleasure in the news that having sex is an easy way to reduce stress, lower cholesterol and improve circulation throughout the body. As if you needed another excuse.

Thanksgiving Weather Forecast

Posted in 1 on November 25, 2009 by valleyacupuncture

In the pre-Thanksgiving rush, we have received an early weather report from our in-house weather reporters. This is one, you should be sure to email your Mom.

Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe
squall or cold shoulder.

During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy.

A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator.

Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops.

By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone.

Happy Thanksgiving!
